Meghan Markle envied Paris Hilton? Apparently so — and here’s how she got over it.

For a while there, all eyes were on Markle — the girl from the U.K. who, after the scandal involving her relationship with her younger sister, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, was the subject of widespread media coverage and online speculation — before her name was changed from Markle to Meghan.

Now, as a newly minted member of an exclusive, international club, Markle is looking to make a name for herself. What started as a joke — a joke that began because she was named after the royal family — has grown into something much more serious.

For nearly three years, she’s been the toast of Paris. Markle, who grew up in London and now lives in Los Angeles, has been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other international publications for her fashion sense, her looks (she’s said the same-sex relationship was the most important aspect of her life), and for her ability to be an all-around good person.

In short, she has been the center of attention, and now that she’s become a serious contender for the British crown, it’s understandable that she’s a little gun-ho about her new, big-time life.

“In today’s world, I’m a star. I make myself out to be,” Markle told Business Insider in a recent interview. “I don’t know, I’m having to be more careful about how much I’m saying and how much I’m doing.”

But it wasn’t always that way. In a 2010 interview with The Telegraph, Markle’s then-boyfriend, Jamie Hince, said this about the time he and Markle first met:

Meghan said, “I was like, ‘What’s up with these tattoos?’ She was going up to my house, and she asked if she could have a tattoo.” I said, ‘Sure.’ I’d never been asked to have a tattoo. Meghan had never been asked, either. I didn’t know what she was on about.
